Description

This 1920’s or 1930’s Whiting & Davis beggar’s bag has a gate top opening with a snap on lid. When you lift the lid off, you can open the bag in an accordion like fashion. It is rather ingenious. Whiting & Davis made this style of fashionable beggar’s bags, which became very popular during the flapper era. This bag measures 6″ high not including the chain x around 4″ wide. The wrist chain measures 5″ long. The lid on top measures 1.25″ in diameter. It is lined with fabric, and has the Whiting & Davis label Made in USA on a tag attached to the lining. It is in very good condition considering its age.

The beggar’s bags were also called miser’s bags, and came into fashion at the end of the 18th century. Originally they were used by both men and women to hold money, and were made of netted silk thread, with tassels and other decorations.
