Description

The term Hediao means nut carving in Chinese. The ancient practice of nut carving dates back to the Ming and Qing dynasties. This one depicts several characters on each side with different expressions. The carving also has flowers and leaves. It has a lacquered and stained wood stand. I am not sure of the age, since there is a body of knowledge and expertise surrounding these “uncanny works of art”. It has been in the Quiet West collection at least thirty years. Based on what I have read about these incredible miniature carvings, it is was most likely carved prior to 1911.
